Helping Making Letters Stick

One concern I’ve had in my teaching, is having student access to the letters we are learning about. Sure, I have lots of magnet letters, alphabet charts and puzzle pieces but I needed something cheap that would stay with the student and assist my teaching process.

I want them to be connected to the letter and my teaching. They need some ownership. That might seem overly dramatic but I am a little passionate about letter knowledge.

ALPHABET GOALS

Every year my goal is to have all my students competent in their alphabet knowledge. Wouldn’t it be amazing to brag to all your friends that your students are rocking their alphabetic principle! Well, maybe just your teacher friends.

We all have ways to help our students in their learning and sometimes what works well for one group of students doesn’t necessarily work well for another. We have to keep all our great teaching and tweak things to meet new needs.

I came up with the idea of individual student ABC cards. I could use them during my explicit teaching, students could use them through the lesson and then take them home to share their learning with their family.

SCHOOL HOME CONNECTIONS

While I know what I do in the classroom is important, I also realize that the more family help I get the better it is for my students’ learning.

By sending home this alphabet card students’ will have something tangible to discuss with their families. Will they all talk about it? No. Will one family do a bunch of amazing learning based on the letter? Yes.

I tell my families that the letter cards will becoming home. I share what learning we do around each letter and what I hope their child is able to share with them.

That way when the cards start coming home, they become a discussion point instead of just recycling.

To make them even better, have your students draw a picture that represents the letter on the back of the card. Monkey for M.
